Lucky Numbers?

I've had two bizarre numerical coincidences occur in the last few days. Being a mathematician I tend to notice these kinds of things.

Tuesday, I had breakfast at Eat-N-Park. I planned on using a $3 off coupon and the remains of a gift card, $3.58, to pay most of the check. Amazingly, the check came to exactly $6.58!

This morning, I entered yesterday's receipt from Weis in my checking account register, $17.58. My last receipt from Weis five days ago, for completely different items, was remarkably $17.58!

Not to mention the dollar amounts in all these all contained 58¢! What does this mean? Should I but a lottery ticket, 0-5-8? Hmmm ...

One, to Go, Please!

I saw this walking through the supermarket this morning, and being me, I read it in a way that was not intended. In my mind it was not a package of six foot-long hot dog buns, it was six-foot-long hot dog buns. Which would require one heckuva hot dog to fill it. Just one, please!

Better Living Through Chemistry

You may think this is snow on the parking lot, but it isn't. You think that maybe someone got a little carried away with the anti-icing chemicals?

Mixed Messages

I was struck by the rather curious juxtaposition of these two billboards on a local street.

First you see this ad for a nearby drugstore featuring two giant drug-filled capsules ...
... then, less than 100 yards farther along, you see this ad encouraging the public to report drug dealing.

I got my updated Sheetz MasterCard a couple of days ago. I find it ironic that the expiration date is 7/11.

Man Buried in a Pringles Can

When I came across this headline, The Man Buried in a Pringles Can - TIME my curiosity was certainly piqued.

It seems the children of Fredric Baur, originator of the now classic Pringles can, respected the wishes of their father when the 89-year-old Baur passed away last month. Apparently the children stopped at a Walgreens on the way to the funeral home to pick up the can

Man Pays Water Bill with Check Written on Toilet Paper

An upstate New York man embroiled in a dispute over his water bill is not being allowed to pay off his debt with a check written on toilet paper. Ron Borgna tried to settle his $2,509.66 bill with a check written on floral print, two-ply toilet paper Wednesday.
It has always been my understanding that a check that included all the necessary information and was properly signed had to be honored regardless of what it was written on.

Inspector Clouseau Would Love This

In a small village in southwestern France it is against the law to die and violators will be severely punished. Exactly how is not clear.
In an ordinance posted in the council offices, Mayor Gerard Lalanne told the 260 residents of the village of Sarpourenx that "all persons not having a plot in the cemetery and wishing to be buried in Sarpourenx are forbidden from dying in the parish."
It seems this unusual ordinance has arisen as a result of the local cemetery being full up.

Wrigley Field Los Angeles???

I learned something I never knew from an old movie, Armored Car Robbery (1950). It was set in Los Angeles. That was made emphatically clear. But, some scenes took place at a ballpark called Wrigley Field. This seemed incongruous. But I Googled "Wrigley Field Los Angeles" and discovered there really was a Wrigley Field in south central LA. It was the home to some Pacific Coast League teams and, in 1961, was the home of the Angels. Learn something new everyday.

The Hope Diamond

On a TV show called "Mysteries of the Smithsonian", I learned that the famous Hope Diamond was donated to the Smithsonian in 1958 by New York jeweler Harry Winston.

That however was not the interesting part. It seems Mr. Winston shipped the 45.52 carat diamond by registered U.S. mail! The total postage was $145.29. It was insured for a million dollars, but apparently Mr. Winston had a lot more confidence in the security of the USPS in 1958 than I have in it 50 years on.

What's Wrong With This Picture?

I received a couple of these National Guard promotional cards with movie tickets. Do you recognize the error?

Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, contains rules for handling and displaying the U.S. flag. If displayed flat against the wall on a speaker’s platform, the U.S. flag should be placed above and behind the speaker with the union of the flag in the upper left-hand corner as the audience faces the flag.

The National Guard really ought to know better.
