Ban Cell Phones While Driving

From Fox News -- Study: Talking on Cell Phone as Dangerous as Driving Drunk
"It means that driving while talking on a cell phone is as bad as, or maybe worse, than driving drunk, which is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated by society."
From Guardian Unlimited (UK) -- Mobiles 'as risky as drink-driving'
"We found that people are as impaired when they drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08%, ..."

Jaffa "Shrine"

Most of my life this facility located on Broad Avenue in Altoona, PA, was known as the Jaffa "Mosque".

When did it become the Jaffa "Shrine"?

Did that happen since 9/11? Was this an effort to disconnect from any possible conception that there might be links to Islam?

Was it done in defference to Islam? So as not to suggest this was an Islamic holy place. Posted by Picasa

The Myht of Al Queda?

From Newsweek -- Hirsh: Debunking the Myth of Al Qaeda

For a different perspective on the war-on-terror and Al Queda read this thought-provoking web-exclusive commentary from Newsweek's Michael Hirsh.
... this sort of debunking has occurred with many Al Qaeda "lieutenants" whose gauzy reputations are reduced to pill-sized smallness ...
"In an open system like a network, the bumbler level is always going to be high because of the ease of entry," says John Arquilla, an intelligence expert at the Naval Postgraduate School. "That's how someone like [American Taliban supporter] John Walker Lindh can walk into the high councils of Al Qaeda and meet bin Laden. And recently the bumbler factor has gone up considerably."
America ventured into the lands of jihad and willingly offered itself as a target in place of the local regimes.

Russian Tunnel Video

Russian Tunnel Video This video comes from a Russian in-tunnel camera located in a tunnel reported to be the longest in-city tunnel in Europe. At some point as it passes below a river, water leaks into the tunnel. When the temperature drops below freezing (as it sometimes does in Russia) combined with the wet conditions you can get some unpleasant consequences as illustrated by this video shot in just one day.

A Lesson Learned?

From CNN  Dems threaten to block their own pay raise

Do you suppose there might have been a lesson learned from events here in Pennsylvania?

Online Entrepreneurship

Having recently decided to relieve some clutter in my life, I posted several read books, as well as a number of DVDs (some of which have never come out of their shrink wrap) on Half.com.

The DVDs are selling like hot cakes. I'm averaging two per day. My only regret is that my meager supply will soon be exhausted.

I had used Half.com a few years ago to unload a lot of old books and music with very good results, so it seemed reasonable to go there again. It's a reasonably easy way to make a few bucks while clearing out stuff you no longer want around.

I recommend giving it a try.

Items of Interest in the News

There were two items in this mornings news that I found interesting --

From CNN -- Are you fat? Here are some novel excuses I know why I'm fat! I love good food. Sometimes even not-so-good food. But, if you are still looking for a reason why you are a little chubby, maybe you'll find it here.

From USA Today -- 'Not it!' More schools ban games at recess Another example of how our society has become over-protective of our kids, shielding them from difficulty rather than allowing them to learn how to cope with adversity.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

On the tables at El Camposino are two bottles of hot sauce, one red, one green. They are labeled in Spanish, but I could tell they say something about habaneros, which I understand is a very hot pepper. As I ate my lunch, I studied these two bottles.

After eating, I still had most of the complimentary basket of tortilla chips left. Curious about these sauces, I sprinkled just a few drops of the red on some of the chips. No chip had more than a drop or two of hot sauce on it. One of the waiters, observing this, commented that the sauce was really hot.

Oh, my! "Really hot" was not sufficient! I ate three chips with sauce on them, then I was throwing plain chips and water down my throat in a desperate attempt to quell the fire.

I feared sampling the green sauce. I may be wrong, but I believe that green sauces are hotter than red. In which case, using the green sauce might prove fatal.

"How It's Made"

There's a Canadian series broadcast on Discovery Science Channel called "How It's Made". It's a half-hour show and it may cover 4 or 5 different products, so obviously, there is seldom great depth in the explanations of their production processes.

It is somewhat interesting, however, and the fast paced segments certainly aren't going to bore too many people.

Most of the segments are produced in factory settings. It's sometimes surprising to me how many parts of the processes are still performed by humans. I would have thought lots more of the tasks would be performed robotically.

When I see these people working at their jobs, I can't help but think how boring and unsatisfying such work must be. These people mostly perform the same repetitive, narrowly-defined task over and over again all day, everyday.

I am very fortunate to do something that is mentally challenging and stimulating, which I find interesting and fulfilling.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (IMDB 7.8/10) is an unusual movie, not likely one you'd choose by chance. It stars Tommy Lee Jones (who also directed), Barry Pepper, and Melissa Leo (Homicide: Life on the Street).

The story is highly topical in view of the current immigration issues. It involves Texans, illegal Mexicans, and the Border Patrol.

At first it seems hard to get a handle on what's going on because it's not presented in chronological sequence. There's a lot for the viewer to think about. The film doesn't post orange flags at every point of significance in the story. It's up to you to make the connections and see the relationships.

Worth watching ****

Tipton Reservoir Early Morning

I got up early this morning and drove out to the Tipton Reservoir to get some pictures. I was hoping to catch the mist rising from the water. It was still somewhat misty, but not as much as I'd hoped for.

Posted by PicasaI've included three of the pictures here. The rest will be are available online soon as I get around to processing and uploading them.

Hope you enjoy.

Where Do I Sign Up?

I spotted this sign at the bottom of the Plank Rd exit ramp off I-99 this morning.

Curious, I visited the site. It is in support of HB 1911, legislation to limit the number of hours a dog may be chained.

Not-So-Good Movies

(Way) Less-than-great movies I've seen recently
  • The Man ** - a little too much "fart" humor
  • Lost ** - appropriately titled
  • The Constant Gardner ** - even Rachel Weisz didn't save this one
  • Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo * - couldn't finish it
  • War of the Worlds (2005) * - ended up cheering for aliens to get Tom Cruise

Photo Sites

I've been playing with cameras and photos and online photo services a lot lately. I like Snapfish the best. Kodak Easy Share is convenient because I can upload directly from Photoshop Elements. Easy Share, contrary to its title, is not really easy to use, being somewhat counter-intuitive. Sony Image Station is also good, but like Kodak Easy Share, uploading from a camera phone or by email is an added cost option. This feature is part of the free service at Snapfish. Snapfish also offers the least expensive prints (as low as $0.10 to $0.12, 4x6). Kodak Easy Share - $0.15, Image Station $0.12, Webshots - $0.19, Y! Photos - $0.15

I found Webshots a bit difficult to use, but not extraordinarily so. It does allow hosting images for use in blogs, websites, etc. But I had a problem getting that to work.

I had used Yahoo! Photos for a long time, but it fell behind in features and flexibility. There is a new Yahoo! Photos in beta which I have signed up for but it hasn't yet come online for me.

I've also experimented with Flickr and Zooomr which are both principally for public sharing of photos, and not really what I want.

AOL Pictures isn't too bad, but I had uploading problems, and the AOL Picture Tools only support Internet Explorer.

Saturday AM

I'm sitting on the patio, such as it is. Wireless is great stuff. Unfortunately, one of my idiot neighbors somewhere is burning stuff in his backyard. I'm not sure what he burns, yard waste I expect, but the smoke is quite annoying.

I played somewhat better golf yesterday (57, compared to Monday's 65) with Ken and his son, David. I was hitting the ball much better with my irons, however, my putting was atrocious. If I get out more, I'll be OK. It was an unplanned outing. The phone rang about 9 am and Ken said they had decided to golf and meet them at 10 if I wanted to join them.

Yesterday, I heard the following baseball score on ESPN, "Cleveland 8, the Yankees 4." It was begging to be finished, "Cleveland ate the Yankees for lunch!"

Giant Eagle Relocating

I have learned from two sources (which I judge reliable) that the Giant Eagle in Morningside Plaza is going to relocate to the the new Logantown Centre mall in the fall of this year. The transition is expected in about November.

Cleaning Up

One of the first tasks of summer is always doing a good housecleaning.

I’ve almost finished that chore.I even purchased a carpet steamer (which I apparently, judging by the waste water, needed more than I thought).

Windows, walls, ceilings. I even cleaned the leaves on the plants (well, most of them).

Now, if I could just figure out a way to keep it clean for at least 3 months!

---------------------------------------

This morning the phone rang just before 5 am. Well, you know you gotta answer it. You don’t get many frivolous calls at that time of the morning.

It was some kid, looking for Teddy and acting silly. I told him to make sure who he was calling at five in the morning. I was back in bed about a minute when the phone rang again. Since I was sure it was Idiot Boy again, I just launched into him. I told him to stop playing with the phone, grow up, and get his mom. After the mom, he hung up and that was that. Not funny.

Big Ben

Since Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle accident Monday morning, he has surely been taking a lot of heat for riding helmetless. Despite being a local hero and nearly everybody's darling, he has had a lot of criticism aimed at him for this "irresponsible" choice.

He's a 24 year-old kid who plays a game for a living. He makes a lot of money, carries significant responsibility, is expected to make lots of decisions, but he's still a kid. Often, kids don't make the best decisions, don't act in the most responsible manner.

I'm glad and thankful that it appears as if he will survive this incident and be able to continue his career. Hopefully, it will mature him a bit, put things into a different perspective for him. It could have turned out infinitely worse. You don't always survive your bad decisions.

Golf (or an unreasonable facsimile thereof)

Well, I finally got out on the golf course yesterday. It was my first time in about 10 months.

You'd have thought it was the first time ever! However, I brought home as many balls as I took out, so I guess it wasn't a thorough disaster.

On the other hand, I seldom hit the ball far enough to be at risk of losing it. As I played, I did get a bit more comfortable and was starting to hit the ball a little better until I got tired.

But, hey, it was fun. Good company with Ken and Patrick. Like sex, you needn't be real good at it to enjoy it!

Hello, World!

This is my first post.

Well, this was the last day of school at Mo Valley. We actually were one of the last school's in the area to get out.
